Oregon and SouthWest Washington Area Footwear and Apparel Industry Employment

PORTLAND, OREGON — The Portland Business Journal has published information obtained through questionnaires a report that addresses the sewn products area industry employment.

  • 17,100 — Combined Oregon and S.W. Washington employment at all firms that completed a survey for The List
  • 159,700 — Combined global employment at all firms that completed a survey for The List
  • 87% — Share of all firms that completed a survey for the list that is headquartered locally
  • 1996 — Average year that firms on The List were founded locally

Columbia Sportswear Co. is now the second-biggest local employer in the footwear and apparel industry, jumping Adidas America, according to the Business Journal's latest industry list.

Columbia employs 1,820 in Oregon, up from 1,732 a year ago. Adidas America employs 1,691, down from 1,768 a year ago, according to the list.

Nike remains the largest local footwear and apparel company by a wide margin, employing 12,000 in Oregon.

Columbia Sportswear remains on a hot streak after reorganizing the company to focus on international and direct sales. The company recently said it had purchased three buildings for a total of $33 million in order to expand its headquarters. It also recently got into the sneaker business.

Portland remains the epicenter of the athletic footwear industry because of the corporate homes of Nike, Columbia, and Adidas America.

The 24 companies on this year's list employ more than 17,000 workers.
