Lenzing Unveils Blockchain Technology for Traceability

PARIS, FRANCE – The Lenzing Group entered the age of digital traceability, showing its blockchain technology at the Première Vision show. The leader in specialty fibers made from renewable material wood will use the technology to support its Tencel branded fiber business, ensuring transparency and traceability for brands and consumers of its fibers in finished products. Lenzing is partnering with Hong Kong-based TextileGenesis on the project.

The supply chain transparency from wood to garments and home textiles, enabling customers and partners to identify Tencel fibers and the respective wood source in each production and distribution step. Via a QR code on the final product, consumers will be able to detect the origin of the clothes they intend to buy.

"The blockchain technology enables brands and consumers to identify Tencel branded fibers across each production and distribution step from fiber-to-retail of the finished garment or home textiles. The technology also allows consumers to verify the garment composition and the underlying textile supply chain at the point of sale, simply by scanning the barcode with a mobile device," said Andreas Dorner, commercial textile director for Europe and the Americas.

The first pilot was presented earlier this month at the Fashion Summit in Hong Kong. In the coming months, more partners will become involved along the entire value chain. Lenzing expects the platform to be fully operational next year.
